There are almost 2500 African Bird species, over half of which are endemic.
When most people think of a safari in Africa, they think of the Big Five: lions, elephants, leopards and giraffes. Most safari-goers target these animals. However, the plains of East Africa are also teaming with wildebeests and zebras, providing nourishment for one of the largest populations of predators in the world.
However, East Africa is much more than a safari destination for large mammals. The birds of Africa are equally worthy of your time and attention, with almost 500 species in the Serengeti alone.
Some African birds will be familiar to Europeans, as they are migratory species that spend the northern Winter in the warmth of Africa. Many, though, are unique.
Kruger National Park in South Africa has over 500 species. If you are wondering where to go on your next birding trip, then Africa should be at the top of your list.
